Cambio and University of Southern Denmark collaborate in project DICTA on clinical decision support for GPs

Cambio and the Research Unit of General Practice, University of Southern Denmark collaborate in project DICTA (DIgital Coaching of patients with Type 2 diabetes and decision support for General practitioners in Denmark), to improve the lives of patients with Type 2 diabetes through an IT-supported lifestyle – and treatment intervention.

In Denmark, there were more than 260,000 Danes living with type 2 diabetes in 2018. The incidence is increasing, which means that by 2030 there will be 430,000 Danes with type 2 diabetes. Many of these citizens are now being treated by their general practitioner, who is also the main co-ordinator of the citizen’s course through the health care system.

Practitioner, Postdoc. Ph. Carl J. Brandt (Research Unit for General Practice, University of Southern Denmark) describes the project:

“DICTA, which is developed in collaboration with Cambio, Liva Healthcare and CGM (XMO) enables high quality individualised treatment in general practice, partly by giving the practitioners access to individual medication recommendations and partly by giving the patient a personal guide (Coach). In addition, DICTA is expected to facilitate collaboration between hospitals, community care and GPs.

He further describes that:

“The intervention is based on integrating two proven effective tools into the IT system of the GP. In this way we adapt a specialised and supervised treatment in general practice in combination with individual patient coaching”.

To enable this, Cambio’s Clinical Decision Support Tool – CDS is used.

By establishing a rule-based tool on evidence-based clinical guidelines for diabetes and blood pressure treatment, the practitioner will be notified of the best possible medical treatment for the citizen. This is done by automatically searching the citizen’s journal for specific indicators that can notify the doctor about which medical treatment is best for that citizen. In this way, it will be possible to better target the diabetic and blood pressure lowering treatment. This increases patient safety and quality of treatment.

There is great potential if the intervention proves to be effective for citizens. Thus, implementation at national level is very feasible, and the intervention can probably be adapted to other lifestyle-related chronic diseases in Denmark and other countries.
